In the 5th place we visited for our Melbourne Brunch Series, we checked out Light Years (x Journeyman) cafe here in Hawthorn, Melbourne (132 Camberwell Road, Hawthorn East, 3123, Victoria, Australia).

Located just outside the hustle and bustle of the Camberwell Junction area, Light Years is a beautifully decorated space that has lots of natural light shining through as you feast on your beautiful meals. Already, from the moment you step in, you can already feel elements of modern light years x space elements, with the this sleek and chic lighting attached to the ceiling.
For those who know me, I’m a huge fan of architecture/interior & design (and especially work of Tadao Ando – due to his minimalist designs & the concrete DNA of his work). Likewise, I loved the interiors of Light Years Cafe too. The colour scheme of this place is insanely serene and calming, and I loved how the greys, greens, whites & little hints of pink & white subtly fell into place. Then you’d have spontaneous elements of metal & the mesh-like black panels creating a bit of contrast, but also allowing the natural light/colours from other elements fall through too.
Now, time for food, the menu had a good assortment of your standard classic brunch dishes, but typically I decide on brunch venues based on the more “innovative” varieties of dishes they might have on offer and thus, Light Years seemed to have a great diverse selection too.
One of our dining companions wanted something on the healthier side, so went for the smashed avocado dish (below) which came with two poached eggs, peas, Yarra Valley feta, pistachio butter, seed dukkah and pomegranate on pumpkin bread. You can see for yourself below how immaculate this dish looks, especially when combined with the pomegranate seeds which provided a little burst of refreshing flavours.
Next up, we also ordered the almond & cornflake crispy chicken burger with coriander red cabbage slaw, maasdam cheese, chipotle mayo in brioche bun, lime and shoestring fries. (I think here we also added the egg & maybe bacon?). This dish was quite nice too but very filling indeed. I wasn’t entirely able to taste the almond/cornflake part of it but it was a nice wholesome crispy chicken burger indeed.
Next up we had the Persian feta potato croquette, which came with two poached eggs, sweet corn puree, crispy kale, tomato corn salsa, manchego & chermoula. This dish was my absolute fave! I loved that the potato croquette were nice and densely packed into a “nugget” like shape, so it kind of felt like you were eating mashed potatoes but in a fried cube like format. Paired with the cheese kale and eggs, the dish had amazing flavours but didn’t feel too heavy or strong on the tastebuds. Definitely a must try!
Overall, really enjoyed Light Years, and I do feel like it’s one of those that isn’t known as well but definitely a hidden gem. If you do give it a try do let me know which dishes you recommended or if you have any other must-try brunch places you recommend!
